Today, mechanical valves are designed to last a lifetime. However, in order to prevent blood clots from developing on the valve, anticoagulation medication (blood thinning drugs) must be taken daily. The anticoagulant medication normally prescribed is widely known as Warfarin (also known as Coumadin and originally used as rat poison). A value of INR (International Normalised Ratio) is used as a measure of the clotting ability of blood. If the INR level is too low, dangerous blood clots may form. If the INR level is too high, minor injuries can lead to prolonged blood loss - either way, incorrect INR levels can be life threatening!

  •     The correct dosage of this medication is different for each person.

  •     The effect of this medication can be altered by alcohol and everyday foods, such as bacon and broccoli.

  •     Regular monitoring is essential for young people living an irregular life.
